Walk: Stockghyll Woods, The Struggle, Kirkstone Pass, Red Screes, Scandale Hause, Little Hart Crag, High Bakestones, High Pike, Low Pike, High Sweden Bridge
Start Point: Under Loughrigg Grid Reference: NY 371 045
Distance: 12 miles Ascent: 3,500 feet
Time: 7.25 hours
Weather: Mainly sunny but with low cloud on the high summits in the morning
Comments: The forecast did say that there may be some low cloud in the morning - and they were correct! However, it was quite atmospheric disappearing into cloud as I climbed from Kirkstone Pass to Red Screes. There were tantalising glimpses as I left the summit and from Little Hart Crag onwards the fell tops were almost completely clear. After leaving High Bakestones the route is mainly downhill but is quite rocky and undulating for much of the way. A very enjoyable day with one of my favourite ascents - to Red Screes.

Stock Ghyll weir . . .

and zooming in on the water

Stockghyll Force

The daisies are out in force but Wansfell Pike is hiding in the low cloud . . .

as is Red Screes and the Kirkstone Pass

This bush seems to have a peculiar covering . . .

which looks rather like cobwebs . . .

or something out of a Sci Fi movie

Evidently the 'web worms' are the culprits . . .

a sign that the ermine moths are preparing to pupate

This lonely deer was very considerate . . .

and stayed still long enough for me to get my zoom lense out

An ideal rock for morning coffee as the Kirkstone Pass just appears out of the mist . . .

and by the time I get there the Pass is completely clear

The swirling mist on Red Screes . . .

makes for some interesting photos of the trig point . . .

and the tarn . . .

and as I leave - gone again!

Patience is rewarded as a short time later Middle Dodd and Brothers Water put on a show

The lower top of Little Hart Crag from the main summit . . .

where I pause for a photo . . .

and check out my next target - High Bakestones

Looking back to Little Hart Crag from the path to . . .

High Bakestones . . .

and again with the Red Screes ridge in the distance

Windermere from High Pike . . .

and in the opposite direction we can see that Red Screes. . .

still has its cloudy hat on

Low Pike with Little Hart Crag in the distance . . .

and time for another photo

A tower ruin - but what was its purpose?
