Walk: Dale Head, Hindscarth, Robinson, Buttermere Moss, Newlands Hause, Knott Rigg, Ard Crags, Sail Beck, Buttermere
Start Point: Buttermere Church Grid Reference: NY 176 171
Distance: 11 miles Ascent: 4,390 ft, descent: 5,080 ft
Time: 6.25 hours
Weather: Sunny, very windy on the fell tops
Comments: Parking in Buttermere we caught the bus to the Honister Youth Hostel to commence our climb to Dale Head. A rocky ridge took us down Hindscarth Edge where the very strong wind made the exposed rocky sections more difficult. We traversed across the eastern flanks of Hindscarth to reach the summit shelter then across the western flanks and on to Robinson.
Our descent was made across Buttermere Moss and down to Newlands Hause. A stiff climb then led up to Knott Rigg where the wind seemed to be gaining in strength and making walking difficult. After continuing on to Ard Crags we dropped down into the valley to return to Buttermere via the Cumberland Way.
This being the last day of the holiday we celebrated by enjoying a well-earned meal at The Fish in Butermere.

St James Church, Buttermere, was consecrated in 1507 . . .

but the present buiding dates from 1840 . . .

and was restored in 1930

From further along the path the three sections that make up the massive bulk of Kirk Fell can be seen (walked 5 days earlier)

Just can't resist another view of the valley with Maiden Moor to the right

Zooming back to Dale Head on the left as we take advantage of the shelter en route to . . .

Hindscarth where the lower shelter looks down over Scope End
