Sugar Loaf

11/09/2012

Walk: Oak woodland, National Trust’s Y Deri Land, Sugar Loaf, Y Deri Parc
Start Point: Lwyn Du car park Grid Ref: SO 288 167
Distance: 6 miles Ascent: 2,520 feet
Weather: Intermittent sun and cloud with a cold wind especially on higher ground Time: 3.5 hours
Comments: The route started out through oak woodland where the sun filtered through the tree canopy to create dappled light and shade. It then followed a very pleasant wide grassy track which made its way through heather towards Sugar Loaf. The ascent started gradually then became steeper as we drew close to the top. There was a strong, cold wind on the summit but the views in all directions were very good. Making our way down a rocky path we soon reached a meeting of paths at Twyn Gwyn and re-entered the National Trust land. Pleasant grassy tracks took us through fields back to the car. A very pleasant half day’s walk which we followed with a trip into Abergavenny.

Abergavenny can just be seen from the car park
