Great Borne & Starling Dodd

21/10/2013

Walk: Herdus, Great Borne, Starling Dodd, Red Pike footpath, Ennerdale track
Start Point: Bowness car park Grid Ref: NY 109 154
Distance: 7.8 miles Ascent: 2,850 feet
Max Altitude: 2,165 feet Time: 5 hours
Weather Very windy with some rain
Comments: It was dry as we set out from the Bowness car park at 10am. After leaving the road the path cuts across the hillside at a diagonal then climbs steeply up to Herdus where we encountered rain. As we made our way across to Great Borne the wind joined the rain to make walking more difficult. Consequently we made a brief stop without photos before dropping down to the fence line where a good path took us across to Starling Dodd. A short break in the rain allowed us to take photos before continuing on, bypassing Little Dodd. We eventually left the path to contour across the hillside to meet the path descending from Red Pike. Following this path down we eventually reached the forest track and made our way back to the car.
