Rudno Polje to Mrežce

Wednesday, 11th July 2012

Distance: 6.5 miles
Total Ascent: 2,400 feet
Total Descent: 2,400 feet
Maximum Altitude: 6,466 feet
Time: 6.5 hours
Weather: Mainly sunny with some cloud

We left the hotel about 8.30am and had quite a long drive to Rudno Polje. On the way we stopped at Goreljek  where there is an unusual monument and burial ground from the Second World War. From here we continued on to Rudno Polje where we visited the biathlon training centre - check out the photos to see how the training takes place when there isn't any snow!
After walking beneath the chair lift we climbed a ravine which was quite steep at times. At the top we took a short break before continuing on our way. Before long we could see the summit of Viševnik and could just make out some of the C+ group. After reaching a very pleasant limestone basin we decided to take a break and observe the group descending from the mountain to a saddle. Continuing on our route we then dropped down and into a dwarf pine forest to reach a viewpoint looking into the Krna valley, an amazing sight with a vast limestone wall opposite us. After walking along a balcony type path we climbed to the summit of Mrežce where we took time out for photos and to enjoy the views. From here we followed a rocky path down to the Blejska Koča where stopped for refreshments. It was then an easy walk down a clear track to the pick up point.
