Podkoren & Rateče

Sunday, 15th July 2012

Distance: 7.5 miles
Total Ascent: 200 feet
Total Descent: 200 feet
Time: 3 hours
Weather: Overcast at first, becoming sunny

The day started out with very heavy rain and it was decided to postpone the walk in the hope that the weather would improve. As the morning wore on the the rain continued to pound the tarmac Al and Jane were able to swap walks around and make today the free day. This gave time for catching up on reading, etc. Later, when the rain seemed to have stopped I ventured into the town. Unfortunately the weather hadn't finished with us and decided to throw some hail accompanied by thunder and lightning in our direction. Taking shelter for a time I finally retreated back to the hotel.
Happily, the weather eventually relented and it was time to put on the walking boots and head across to the other side of the river. I made my way through some pleasant meadows to Podkoren, through town square and past the Gothic church. I continued on to Rateče where there was another church, situated in quite an unusual position. From here I crossed back over the river and followed the cycle track, the old railway line, back to the hotel.
