Rodica & črna Prst

Monday, 9th July 2012

Distance: 12 miles
Total Ascent: 2,770 feet
Total Descent: 6,200 feet
Maximum Altitude: 6,444 feet
Time: 9 hours
Weather: Sunny and hot with a cool breeze on the ridge

After taking the bus to the cable car station at Ukanc we ascended in the cable car then on the chair lift.  A short climb brought us to the higher flanks of Sija and the start of our walk which would sometimes follow the crest of the ridge and sometimes contour to the north or the south. As we approached Rodica, the highest summit in the ridge, a choice of two routes provided the opportunity for some of the party to test out their fitness in racing to the top!!! The summit, at 6,444 feet, was the ideal spot to take in the views while stocking up on the calories and liquids. Continuing on our way we were treated to amazing views of the huge limestone rock cliffs that formed parts of the ridge. We could also see numerous summits stretching into the distance, including Triglav. Eventually reaching we reached Črna Prst, the most eastern summit of the 'Southern Bohinj' mountain chain, where we stopped for refreshments. Then we started the descent of approximately 1,600 feet to the next hut,  followed by approximately 4,400 feet descent to Bohinjska Bistrica. As we arrived too late to catch the bus back to the hotel Al set off to organise alternative transport. No sooner had we settled down to enjoy the ice creams we had just bought than he arrived back with two minibuses in tow - what service!
