Walk: Hoffmann Kiln, Stainforth, Stainforth Force, Hargreaves Barn, Feizor, Pennine Journey footpath, Stackhouse, River Ribble
Start Point: Langcliffe car park Grid Reference: SD 823 651
Distance: 8.5 miles Ascent: 1,084 feet
Time: 4.75 hours
Weather: Damp and cold to begin with but brightening up in the afternoon
Comments: The reason for this walk was to explore the Hoffmann Kiln first visited briefly quite a few years ago. It now forms part of the Craven Lime Works trail along with two other kilns but it is the main attraction. Due to recent rain the rest of the route was chosen to avoid muddy ground though a brief detour to Stainforth Force resulted in very muddy boots!!

Heading towards Stainforth Scar . . .

the path travels beside the Settle to Carlisle railway line

A road leads from the B6479 to the Craven Lime Works Trail car park but the trail can also be accessed by the path ahead

The Weigh House where some of the lime and limestone was collected by horse and cart for local use

Entering the Hoffmann Kiln . . .

I walked along the right hand side . . .

and back down the opposite side where the entrance can be seen

I met two gentlemen who were exploring the roof . . .

where bats could be found in the holes

Reaching the starting point . . .

Luna signals it's time to go . . .

and enjoy being in the open air again

The remains of the building that used to house a big wheel that hauled wagons up the inclined plane

Luna thinks this would be a good place to stop . . .

but we continue down the steep slippery steps . . .

which get even steeper round the corner and lead to . . .

one of the triple draw kilns which sits below the flags Luna was standing on . . .

then we have to climb back up the steep steps

Stainforth Force . . .

where I try to get the best possible photo . . .

with no people in the way!!

Crossing the River Ribble near Stackhouse . . .

and looking downstream where the water eventually reaches Stainforth Force
