Weather: | A cold wind with some sunny spells. | ||
Comments: | Ascending 1,248 feet in 6.7 miles would seem to be quite a reasonable walk. However the first 900 feet was climbed in 1.5 miles!! This, together with difficult terrain due to recent very wet weather, this became quite a challenge. Navigation was difficult at times and some footpaths almost impassible. A repeat of this walk would have to be after a long spell of dry weather!! |
The Whirlaw Stones . . .
and The Wizard of Whirlaw, believed to have been carved in situ by William Holt who wrote a novel of the same name
Heading across Bride Stones Moor . . .
the gritsone rocks, eroded into unusual shapes, come into view
The Bride now stands alone, the groom having toppled over long ago . . .
is now joined by Luna
Exploring other rocks nearby . . .
provides another view of The Bride . . .
but the trig point . . .
really doesn't seem to fit in here
Leaving the Bride Stones we pass more unnamed eroded rocks
Mount Cross, carved somewhere between 7th and 11th centuries, is believed to be the oldesst religious monument in the area
Hartley Royd farmhouse is Grade 11 listed and was built in the early 17th century
From the car park to Whirlaw Stones are only 1 mile away but it is a 600 foot climb!!
