An early morning shuttle took us to the station to catch the TranzAlpine express to Arthur's Pass National Park. This is the highest pass over the Southern Alps and and is the starting point of a number of interesting walks. The train journey provided great views of the Waimakariri River the braided rivers of the Canterbury Plains (streams separated by island of shingle).
