The Kauaeranga valley was once filled with magnificent kauri trees but today only a few giant kauri remain although young kauri saplings are spread throughout the forest. A wide variety of routes cater for all walkers who can choose from a number of camping sites.
Walking in the Kaueranga Valley provides great views
The route of the Kauri Walk . . .
followed a path that had been used . . .
to transport food, etc across the hills using donkeys
Steps were cut into the rock to help them get up the steep parts
The native bush is still recovering from logging that stripped the forest from 1870s to 1920s
Crystal clear water flows through the valleys
Steps were added . . .
on the steeper sections
