After walking through Stara Fužina we made our
way up beside the river to enter the Mostnica Gorge.
Here the water has carved out a limestone gorge
about 2 kilometres long and in places just 1 metre
wide. It is at its deepest at The Devil's Bridge
which was built in a single arch of hewn stone and
placed over the plunging trench of the stream.
An old legend says that the people of Bohinj built a
bridge before nightfall, but by the morning it was
completely destroyed. They concluded that the Devil
himself should build the bridge. In exchange for
building it, the Devil demanded the first soul that
crossed it. One peasant had a dog, and when the
bridge was finished he threw a bone to the other
side, and his dog leapt after it. Thus the Devil
received the soul of a dog. In his anger he thrashed
his tail about bringing down the fence but the
bridge still stands.
After leaving the gorge we made our way on to open
pasture to reach a Dom, the ideal spot for
refreshments. A short walk then took us up to the
Mostnica waterfall where the spray from the rushing
water reached us well before we reached the
waterfall. After retracing our steps we took an
ascending path through the woods and on to Uskovnika
where we ate lunch. A good track then took us on to
our pick-up point. |
