Castiglione, Monte Pizza RidgeSunday, 15th April 2012
The group assembles for the first walk of the holiday
Making our way through Old Francavilla we can see the ruin on the hilltop
An unusual umbrella pine tree
As we ascend, Mt Etna comes into view - hidden under a blanket of cloud
A bridge takes us across the Alcantara River
A good path . . .
leads to a mule track . . .
and a short pause . . .
to reach Castiglione
Overlooking the valley the cloud still covers the summit of Mt Etna
Some of the terracing seen on the hillsides
A small rise is the perfect stop for 'first lunch'
At our second stop . . .
the surrounding trees are full of . . .
pine cones
Al finds the ideal position . . .
for this skull
