As we travelled towards Mount Etna we wondered just how far the roads would be clear enough for the hotel bus to navigate so we were pleased to find that we could go further than expected. Having alighted from the bus we quickly donned cold weather gear ready for our walk across the snow. Jane led the group out following existing tracks, though some members of the group did manage to find thigh depth holes! Walking slightly uphill and sinking a few inches into the snow with every step was pretty hard work and some of the party decided to cut the walk short and return to the bus. A few intrepid explorers continued on to a 'lava mountain' to experience walking on a mound of loose lava chunks. This was deemed to be a suitable 'turn around' point and we retraced our route back to the bus. This being the closest point we had been to the summit of Mount Etna we enjoyed great views and saw interesting cloud formations made by the steam from the summit.

A short bus journey down the road brought us to the Rifugio Ragabo which made the most delicious hot chocolate. After relaxing at the rifugio some of the group decided to remain there to read books while one group set out on a short walk and the other group set out on a longer walk, all with the intention of finding a suitable spot for lunch. The 'C' group walked along a cinder track over packed snow with views of relatively new lava flows and older ones that were beginning to show signs of new plant growth. When the weather began to deteriorate it was decided to begin the return walk a little early. Fortunately, on the way back the rain cleared enough for lunch to be enjoyed out in the open as had been planned. Gathering back at the rifugio, ready for the return to the hotel, we were pleased to have had a great day (apart from a little rain) for our trip to Mount Etna.
