Sugar Loaf

Wednesday, 14th April 2010
10 miles, 2,500 feet

Initially we headed up to Lone Rock where we were able to see more San rock paintings. We were told that the lower ones were paler because they were more weathered and caught by the rain. The climb up Sugar Loaf gap involved a good scramble. We continued on to Sugar Loaf and Cold Hill from where we got a good view of the Amphitheatre. We returned by the same route as the hotel guide informed us that the original route would be too steep and difficult. After dinner we were entertained by the Cavernberg Resort choir – some of the staff.

Not too far from the hotel we get a quick glance of a baboon in the grass . . .

but the chameleon . . .

gives us more time to photograph him

Pretty hot today so shade is most welcome

Stanley points the way . . .

to more San Rock Art . . .

with the strange figures . . .

representing parts of their lives

Frequent stops are welcome on a hot day

Time to set off again . . .

and Sugar Loaf Gap comes into view

Part way up the gap . . .

and again from higher up

The plateau provides . . .

a good spot for a break . . .

to take in views of Sugar Loaf  . . .

and Camel's Hump (right of centre)

From Sugar Loaf the plateau we were on is very clear . . .

as the rest of the group arrive on the summit

The opposite side of Sugar Loaf . . .

and another sheltered spot for a refreshment stop

Walking on to Cold Hill, and the Amphitheatre seems quite close . . .

especially when using the zoom!

One for the album . . .

whilst members of the group take in the views

From a different vantage point the Metsi-Matsho Dam can be seen . . .

and Stanley - on the edge

Heading back down Sugar Loaf Gap . . .

'Montezuma's Shadow' looks down on us . . .

and we head back to the hotel
